This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Nora "Awkwafina" Lum, a NYC based Asian-American rapper, discusses the beginnings of her career. What started with a search for self soon became a full time career.

Awkwafina, born Nora Lum, is a New York City-based rapper from Forest Hills, Queens. Her musical career began at the age of 11 where she learned how to play the trumpet. It eventually got her in to Laguardia High School, an alma mater she shared with Azealia Banks and Nicki Minaj. Awkwafina began rapping over beats she produced on Garageband and Logic at age 17. After graduating college and working briefly in publishing, she released the video for “My Vag,” a female parody on Mickey Avalon’s “My Dick,” a song she wrote when she was 19-years-old. The YouTube video went viral in 2013 and was hailed as a “feminist ode” of sorts. Later that year, she released her second most popular track, “NYC Bitche$,” a glorified rant on the gentrification of New York City. Awkwafina and her music has since been featured on NBC, NPR, The Daily Beast, New York Magazine, Buzzfeed, Bust Magazine, Jezebel, Gawker and Cosmopolitan. Awkwafina is currently featured on MTV’s Girl Code and hosts a late-night talk show web series called “Tawk.” She resides in Brooklyn.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
